Like Compact Disc
applications,
SACD players are developed around an optical
laser unit which reads digital information from a
disc and forward them to a servo-decoding board. As
a result, this board provides subcode information to
the user section, audio streams to the
digital-to-analogue conversion board, ...
However, unlike Compact Disc, SACD discs are based
on new technologies in order to provide a much better audio
quality : DSD conversion to 1-bit resolution with a
2.2884MHz sampling frequency, improved dynamic range
(greater than 120dB across the audio band) and
frequency response ranging from DC to 100kHz. SACD
consequently offers a far better musicality, after
digital-to-analogue conversion, than standard CDs or
any other optical media in the audio
market. Multi-channel possibility, watermarking
copy-protection and hybrid discs are also part of
the SACD success in the high-end audio domain. More
information on SACD can be found in the technology
pages of the DAISy site.
For OEM applications, complete SACD modules will be
proposed. These modules are the result of many years
of experiences Philips laboratories got in the
optical reading systems. Thus, these modules include
the latest technologies in order to assure the best
playability with optical discs. Such a playability
is also guaranteed by the careful attention which
has been paid to EMC
during the design phase of the servo board. Finally,
the modules will offer the latest options as regard to audio decoding :
Super Bit Mapping Direct Conversion, frequency over-sampling, ...
Because CD and SACD are based on similar
optical reading technologies, the applications using
these modules are often high-end audio
players which provides an excellent audio quality
with both formats, CD & SACD. Besides, an audio
manufacturer can bring his know-how in order to
improve the digital-to-analogue section of the
player.
For each SACD module, additional components can be
proposed, like display kits, power supply units, ...
in order to make easier and faster the development of complete
digital players, and to consequently reduce the time-to-market
period. More information are provided in the selected
module's page.
