A CD mechanism consists
of a motorized 3-beam optical pick-up unit which
moves across the disc, and a spin table connected to
a driving motor for disc rotation. The optical
pick-up unit produces a laser light spot on
the information layer of the disc, through an objective
lens which can move up and down thanks to a focus coil. The
laser light is diffracted by the disc's pits and the
returned beam strikes a photodiode assembly in the
optical pick-up unit.
Thus, a CD mechanism is the core of a CD
application : it retrieves data from the disc
and transfers them to the audio decoder.
It also means that serious knowledge in optical data
retrieving is required to manufacture a complete CD
player around a bare mechanism. Indeed, the servo-decoding
section has to be developed, including hardware and
software to control the optical pick-up unit.
In order to make easier the design phase
of the project and reduce time-to-market, it is advised to use complete
modules which have already been optimized to provide
an excellent playability for high-end audio
applications.
