SACD original specifications

The world's music editing companies, which are interested in the next generation high-density audio disc (among other things, to get a better copyright protection system than for CD), gathered a few years ago into an International Steering Committee (ISC). Beside managers from the six main world editing companies, the recording industry's three major trade associations also joined the ISC : the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ) and Europe's International Federation of Phonographic Industry (IFPI).

The ISC has rapidly set up a 'wish list' of key technical requirements concerning the next generation of digital audio disc. It soon appeared obvious that any solution for this new format would require the approval of the ISC, which owns the copyrights for the music to be written on such a disc... The 13 key points to be fulfilled by the new audio disc are detailed below. Then, conformity of SACD with all these requirements will be briefly presented.

1

Active Copyright Management System (ACMS)

The new format should accept any data, circuit, mechanism or IC required for the Active Copyright Management System (ACMS). It should also be compatible with any previous copyright systems.

2

Copyright Identification

Data information required by ACMS and ISRC (ISO3901) should be included in the digital audio signal of the new format, and transmitted through any digital output.

3

Anti-piracy measures

Pre-recorded discs should include SID codes.
The digital audio format should also provide enough space to include copyright and anti-piracy information data.
All recordable discs should be easily recognisable to avoid confusion with pre-recorded discs.
If possible, ISD codes should be written on CD-Recordable discs.
All recording devices should generate and record the following information :

an identification code to know the brand, model and serial number of the recording device
an extra code written on the disc, which includes the total recording time of the device and the number of discs which have been recorded with this device (there should be of course no possibility to reset this counter)

4

Compatibility

The new system should play back CD audio discs (CD-DA).
Discs according to the new format should also have a layer compatible with current CD-players.

5

Audio, video and data storage

Beside audio, the new format should include video and data areas.

6

Conditional access

There should not be any conditional access to the audio content of the disc.
However, an additional content can be made accessible by authorised people.

7

Highest quality two-channel stereo and 6-channel sound

The new system should provide 8 independant output channels with the following characteristics :

2 high-quality stereo channels
6 extra channels with the highest quality allowed by disc space

Losless coding method should be used with a certified algorithm

8

Archive and master transfer without loss of sound quality

Audio data as available from today's masters should be transferred to the new support without any loss in sound quality. On the other hand, the new format should propose transfers to current digital audio format (including 16-bits / 44.1kHz).

9

Extended disc functions, including text

These extended functions should provide compulsory facilities (disc title, authors names, tracks titles, tracks numbers and index, video components, time information), including many options

10

Packaging

Packaging must not include any caddy or cartridge

11

Durability

The new system should present a better protection to minor alterations, like scratches, than Compact Discs.

12

Disc sides

Single-sided disc is preferable

13

Disc size

12cm diameter disc (4.75") is preferable
